metanoia is greek for repentance. this group was formed in townsville, queensland , australia in 1990. they produced 3 full length albums as follows: in darkness or in light(1995), don't walk dead(1998), and time to die(1999), as well as three demos entitled akeldama(1995), screaming fetus(1994). and an untitled demo(1990), they have also been featured on two other compilation albums released by rowe productions: the raise the dead australian metal compilation, and hard and heavy from down under. the line up for the first full length was lisa(spud) bennet(bass), steve(yak) bennet(guitar/backup vocals), justin(yowie) smith(vocals), and dylan speerstra(drums), as well as guest guitarist justin heath. from then on the lineup was the same except for the drummer dylan speerstra who was replaced by ian(choir boy) northy.
the music on the first album was hailed as 1000 pounds of bombastic death metal fury by the mortified press and is thoroughly a masterpiece textured with beautiful guitar, drums that sound like bones hammering on drum skins, and a deep gutteral voice that sounded like peels of thunder. tracks of notoriety are acute obliteration, in darkness or in light, torn by dogs, death of death, and the seventh seal, as well as dimensions of life. the beautifully drawn cover artwork was done by artist michael maxwell.
the group was well known throughout australia due to their unending care, kindness, and support in the ministries the band members offered. from suicide hotlines, to teen pregnancy counseling, and sidewalk services(street church), this band was dedicated to making the world better and as such will never be forgotten.
